| The Sagittarius class minesweeper Castor was put into service in 1962. After having sailed on national and international waters for 28 years, it was removed from service in 1990 and sold to a Dutchman. The ship went through several modifications and was then sold to Greece. However, to move such a ship in compliance with Greek law required three ships engineers, one captain and many helping hands. A vessel of about 50 metres, 24 knots speed that was powered by 32 cylinders with a total of 4,500 hp did not comply to the Greek regulations. The turbo chargers were removed and the engine power was limited to 1,000 hp.
The vessel was later sold to a Sheik. This deal, however, was never fully closed and the Castor fell into a kind of deep sleep until its current owners discovered the ship on the Internet in 2004. The owners took Castor to Marmaris/Turkey, where she was refitted. The extensive refit required almost a full years effort. The prescribed program included maintenance of the engines and technical periphery, renovating of the deck and hull, the entire overhaul of the underwater hull at the Turkish navel shipyard in Aksas. Old paint and fillings were removed from the entire outside wood up to the last corner and the wood was professionally repaired, if necessary. The wood was then repainted in the old splendour, naval grey. Despite all natural setbacks that such a project involves, the owners are both very happy and proud to cruise with the only German Sagittarius class minesweeper, which has been returned to such an excellent and seaworthy state. The Castor has come back! |
