Born as a Marconi ketch motorsailer, actually Marconi cutter handy motorsailer , Chubasco was designed by Charles D. Mower for George H. Townsend and built as Cheerio Too by M.M. Davis in Solomon Island. Charles D. Mower was also the measurer of the New York Yacht Club and measured the Reliance and the Shamrock III in 1903. The Chubasco was sold in 1937 and registered in Venezuela until it became Aruban in 2018. Overhauled in 1990 and 1996. Current owner, since 2018, has maintained the boat as it was maintained since 1935. Review the pictures and contact us for more information. Last haul out April 2019. Also new rigging in 2019.
Strong Mahogany planking fastened with Everdure screw to close spiced frames. Chubasco had a full restoration in 1990 and 1996 with change of all the planking.
Accommodations:Total sleeping places: two double beds + double settee + two bunks = 8. In warm weather two more could sleep in the cockpit given the size of the seats. The layout is simply realized, but has a wide and airy look, perfect for warm climate. Nice original parts of furniture and bronze fittings make living inside pleasant. Many storage places.
As you enter the companionway you find to starboard in this order the following: the galley, a sette with a bunk on top of it, a bathroom and then the fore cabin. Further to the bow is the anchor locker which you can access from that cabin. As you enter the companionway you find to port in this order the following: the navigation table, a bench belonging to the settee with a bunk on top, a closet with drawers and a long door to a little closet (this is just in front of the bathroom) and then the fore cabin. This "strait" between closet/drawers and the bathroom make it possible to close the cabin using the same door of the little closet.The settee table lowers down on two "feet" and the back rest cushions turn into the mattress of the table. It gets used as a double bed. One of the two bunks is a bit narrow (port side) but ok for kids or smaller persons. Entering the stern owners`cabin, you find a bathroom to starboard and a desk to port. The "chair" for the desk is a long board that comes out from under the bed and sits on the stairs. Pretty comfortable.A wide bed is on the stern part of the cabin.
Chubasco was designed by Charles D. Mowerand built as Cheerio Too by M.M. Davis in Solomon Island ,Maryland in the spring 1935.
Charles Drown Mower of New York was a noted yacht designer, author and measurer of the New York Yacht Club. From an article that appeared on Yachting magazine of august 1935 we learn that Cheerio Too was fast under sail for her generous sail plan and thanks to the 3,5 Tons of outside ballast, generally not fitted in a less performing motorsailer . She reached easily 8knots under power alone with an 80 HP GM 671 motor, to state the performing design of her hull. The first owner George Townsend bought the Davis shipyard in 1939 and had another boat built for himself; Cheerio Too was sold to John P. Phelps and Carlos Heny in 1939 who registered her under Venezuelan flag and since then the yacht was called Chubasco and belongs to the same family. In 1990 she underwent a total refit by Taylor Allen of Rockport Marine and Tony Lawson, an English shipwright. The boat was completely rebuilt with new mahogany planking, new frames, floors and decks.
