On her mooring in Milford Connecticut this summer. Kiva (hull #55) is a fine, beautiful example of the classic highly regarded Concordia yawl. Well maintained by her owners through the years. The high degree of her comprehensive rebuild (from 2014-2017) by the boat builders of Back Narrows Boatyard, Maine has certainly produced one of the most structurally sound yachts in the Concordia fleet.

Kiva has been cared for and fully maintained by her current owner for 37 years. She has an impressive sail inventory, and features a Yanmar diesel (new 2003). Previously Kiva had a white painted hull however she now has varnished mahogany bright topsides (freshly varnished for 2019 season).
Price reduction this fall season, owner motivated to sell.

Hull and construction
Kiva (#55) was built in 1957 at Abeking and Rasmussen shipyard, on the banks of the River Weser, Lemwerder, Germany. Extensive structural work was completed at Back Narrows Boatyard in Boothbay Maine from 2014-2017. The hull is fabricated with planked mahogany upon white oak stem, frame and beams with bronze fastenings. From bow to galley there are 65-70 new white oak frames, 28 new floor timbers. Most mahogany planking below the water line and some above (approximately 55-60) was replaced in the rebuild.
Kiva has a new Angelique heartwood mast step. This tropical hardwood is very hard and dense and is a distinct upgrade from the original oak step, in that now compression loads from the mast on the hull/frames will be decreased. The forefoot was also replaced in the recent rebuild. Photographs of the restoration in Maine are available.
Previous to the 2014-17 rebuild Kiva had structural work carried out at Concordia Company South Dartmouth Massachusetts. This included mahogany deadwood replacement and a new lead keel in 1986 replacing the original iron. This results in a slight resistance to heeling. Kiva is therefore one of the few lead keeled Concordia yawls.The seacocks were renewed in 2015.
Decks are painted Dynel over wood stem to stern (2015-16)
The house sides are varnished mahogany, the cabin top painted canvas over wood.
The yacht is finish is now bright varnished (Fifteen coats applied) topsides since the extensive restoration of 2014-2017. Freshly varnished for 2019 season.
Kiva has bright and warm interior with comfortable berths for four. The forecastle has a sail bin and stowage forward, with two folding pipe berths with lockers beneath. The forward cabin has reading lights,and a mahogany overhead butterfly hatch providing ambient light and ventilation. There is a tinned copper water tank beneath starboard locker. Two round bronze opening ports forward. Abaft to port thru paneled locust door is the enclosed head with manual toilet with macerator for overboard discharge and new polyvinyl holding tank and plumbing (2017), vintage vanity, medicine cabinet, linen hamper, locker space and opening bronze portlight. To starboard across from the head are two hanging lockers.
The main cabin is furnished with traditional and very comfortable Pullman/Concordia style berths port and starboard. These fold out of the way to provide back rests and leave comfortable settees for day use. The slings of all the berths are new Dacron sailcloth. The upholstery and and cushions are in burgundy corduroy. The knotty pine paneling gives the Concordia a distinctive New England feel, the joiner work and trim is locust. There is a varnished locust fixed drop leaf table just port of centerline with fiddles. Water tanks are located beneath both main saloon settees.
A cast iron (currently non-functional) Concordia solid fuel cabin heater/stove is set forward and slightly to port in the main saloon which can vent via Charley Noble. Outboard of the berths are shelves and slatted lockers. Headroom is 6'3" in main saloon. Overhead is painted white throughout. Interior 12 volt lamps The main saloon has an oversized varnished wood butterfly hatch/skylight just aft of mainmast.
The teak sole can be easily removed for access to the bilge. The galley is aft to starboard with gimballed paraffin/kerosene Taylor two burner stove and oven. The are lockers and shelving outboard. To port there is the icebox, storage and the stainless steel galley sink with hand pump.The Yanmar diesel engine (new 2003) is located partly under bridge deck and partly under cockpit deck and is readily reached by removing the panels and covers. The engine box can serve as a galley station. The galley benefits from the ambient light and ventilation provided from two opening portlights.
The companionway leads out to the self-bailing cockpit, that is finished in bare teak. Mahogany coamings, folding locust slatted seat backs at aft end of cockpit. Green cockpit cushions. The 24 gallon fuel tank is located under the cockpit sole. Cockpit seats taper aft, sheets are easily handled from the helm.
Sails and Rigging
Mast-head rigged yawl with well constructed glued up varnished Sitka spruce spars. Main mast is keel stepped on Angelique heartwood (which is very stiff, hard and dense) which will retain superior load distribution (2016). Main mast was repaired and restored in 2015-16. New oak pads/bedding; main chain plates re-set. Extensive sail inventory. Self tacking foresail rig with hanked on foresails. Spars have three coats of varnish applied spring 2019.

Engine and mechanical details
- 2003 Yanmar 3GM30 diesel (providing 27 HP at 3,600 rpm) with approximately 150 hours running time. Engine renewed 2019: Replaced cables, hoses, thermostat, injector fuel line, cleaned and painted.
