In order to combine performance and comfort, a yacht requires a high level of stability with a manageable sail plan. The foundation of X-612 is a highly developed composite keel which places the lead ballast low down in a hydrodynamically efficient flattened bulb. This very efficient keel form keeps to a minimum the flow of water from leeward to windward under the keel tip and allows for a high aspect-ratio form which reduces wetted surface. The result is a low drag - high lift keel which generates excellent righting moments for fast and stable sailing. The hull is built in full sandwich and employs the well known X-Yachts steel floor frame. Relatively fine forward sections run smoothly back to maximum beam, which is well aft. The wide aft sections generate optimum sailing waterline length and aid stability while contributing to improved downwind performance and ease of steering, even in heavy going. The wide stern sections also allow for two commodious aft cabins, and even the possibility of a garage in the stern for the storage of a 10 ft. RIB, which is offered as standard. Over the years there have been many "perfect solutions" to accommodation layout. When settling on the choice of interior layout and finish, the X-Yachts team took the very best features developed for smaller X-Yachts, and built these - plus much more - into the interior of the X-612. The result is an elegant harmony of interior and exterior design and finish. Top grade teak, ample storage space, fine laminated door frames, graceful curves and a subtle balance between open spaces for entertainment and practical sea going elements of design are brought together with a consistent attention to detail and quality. The result is an interior that allows for the often conflicting needs of entertainment in harbour and comfortable life at sea. The floorboards are split into relatively small sections allowing easy access to the bilge at important service sites such as tanks, pumps, heating and sanitary installations. Other features such as flush fitting door handles that don't snag clothes may seem like details but are nevertheless elements of the overall experience. The huge investment that X-Yachts made in tooling becomes immediately apparent upon inspection of the interior of the X-612. Features such as the FRP headliner with built-in halogen lights and shower cubicles with moulded sink units and built-in shower stools are both practical and attractive. Two very roomy aft cabins are separated by a large and well insulated machinery compartment designed to house a generator, watermaker, air conditioning pumps, and more. Each aft cabin has an en suite head and shower. At the heart of the X-612 is her spacious saloon with seating for the entire crew and guests around a large and beautifully finished table. The settee close to the center line is split into two units to allow easy access to the table for food and drinks. Another unique feature is the navigation station, which can seat four people on two settees which face each other over the nav table. Forward of the nav station is the galley, in which it is possible to prepare the most sophisticated dinners with all the conveniences of home at hand. There is an extractor fan built into the headliner above the stove and a large freezer with separate refrigerator. There is plenty of working surface, ample stowage of provisions and utensils, and two very practical deep sinks close to the yacht's center line. The galley is laid out in a way that makes it easy and safe for the cook to prepare meals under way. The owner's stateroom has been placed forward of the mast, away from the noise and disturbance of the action in the cockpit but far enough aft to be comfortable at sea. Forward of the owner's cabin is the owner's toilet, which has a separate shower room. Ahead of this compartment is the large sail locker equipped with fold down bunks and a head and sink for the crew. This can be accessed either from the deck through a large sliding hatch or through a watertight door in the owner's toilet. The deck layout is clean and logical. Worthy of note is the big cockpit where the whole crew can sit comfortably. It has built-in foot supports and an excellent view while sailing. The helmsman can either stand or sit, but either way the view forward is unrestricted. Another great feature of the X-612 is the large sturdy sprayhood which deploys easily from a recessed deck stowage bin. All the halyards, which run back to the cockpit, are hidden under the deck making the deck and coach roof of the X-612 a safe and easy place to work or relax. The deck layout works equally well cruising or racing and it is a testament to the unparalleled cruising and racing experience gained by X-Yachts over the years. The X-612 is perfectly balanced and pure joy to steer. When a gust hits and the boat heels, the helmsman retains full control of the boat. As a result of the configuration of rig and keel, the boat displays almost the opposite tendency to nose diving. When hard pressed to windward and the stern sections dig in and the bow rides slightly higher, the helm retains positive pressure and control, and the yacht simply climbs to windward. Going to windward in a good breeze the X-612 will sail at around 9.5 knots, at an angle of around 35-36 degrees to the wind. On a reach she will sail comfortably at well over 11 knots. Even if you have no interest in racing, there is no substitute for the feel of a well designed and built yacht sailing in perfect balance. The feel of the X-612 is one of a stable, solidly built yacht that was built to sail.
